Mesh, Screens and Sheets Used in Mining, Cement and Steel Plants

Where woven mesh, vibrating screens, perforated sheets, expanded metal and fencing are typically used in mines, quarries, cement plants and steel plants.

Heavy industry uses mesh and perforated metal in two broad ways. Some products are process parts that wear and get replaced on a schedule, such as screen cloths and strainer elements. Others are structural or safety items installed once, such as guards, walkways and fencing. This guide maps common products to where they are typically used in mines and quarries, cement plants and steel plants.

Mining and quarrying

Screening is the main use. Crushed rock, ore and aggregates pass over vibrating screens that split the feed into sized fractions.

  • Crimped woven screen cloth in high carbon steel wire for the main decks. Heavier wire on the top deck where large lumps land, finer apertures on the lower decks.
  • Slotted or long-opening mesh where flaky material or near-size particles cause blinding. See screen blinding and pegging.
  • Thick perforated plate for scalping decks and heavy impact feed, where wire would break too quickly.
  • Rubber or PU beading on the crown bars under the screen cloth.
  • Expanded metal and welded mesh for conveyor guards, walkways and platforms.
  • Chain link or welded mesh fencing around stockpiles, crusher yards and substations.

Cement plants

A cement plant crushes limestone and additives, grinds raw meal, burns clinker in a kiln and grinds the clinker into cement. Mesh and sheet products appear at several points.

  • Vibrating screens for limestone, additives, gypsum and coal in the raw material and fuel handling sections.
  • Fine woven mesh in laboratory test sieves for checking particle size of raw materials and cement. IS 4031 (Part 1), for example, measures cement fineness on a 90 micron IS sieve.
  • Perforated sheet for acoustic panels, silencers and ventilation covers on fans and enclosures.
  • Expanded metal for walkways, stair treads and platforms around mills and conveyors.
  • Welded mesh guards around moving equipment, and fencing for the site boundary and substations.

Steel plants

Integrated steel plants handle large tonnages of iron ore, coal, coke, fluxes and sinter, and run extensive water, oil and air systems.

  • Vibrating screens for iron ore lump and fines, coke, limestone and dolomite in raw material handling and at the blast furnace stock house.
  • Heavy perforated plate or heavy wire screens for sinter, where both temperature and impact are high.
  • Woven mesh and perforated sheet strainer elements in cooling water and process water systems.
  • Fine woven and Dutch weave mesh in hydraulic and lubrication oil filters for mill equipment.
  • Welded mesh, expanded metal and perforated sheet guards around conveyors and rolling mill equipment.
  • Fencing for raw material yards, storage areas and substations.

Matching material to duty

Abrasion, impact, moisture and temperature decide the material more than the industry does. The table below is a general starting point; confirm against your drawing and operating conditions.

UseTypical productCommon material
Dry screening of rock, ore, coalCrimped woven screen cloth, perforated plateHigh carbon steel wire, mild steel plate
Wet screeningWoven or slotted mesh, perforated plateHigh carbon steel or stainless steel
Lab particle size testingFine woven mesh in test sievesStainless steel
Water and oil strainersWoven mesh, Dutch weave, perforated sheetSS 304 or SS 316
Walkways and platformsExpanded metalMild steel, painted or galvanised
Guards and partitionsWelded mesh, expanded metal, perforated sheetMild steel or GI
Perimeter fencingChain link, welded meshGI or PVC coated GI

Dry abrasive screening usually wears the wire out before corrosion matters, so carbon steel is the normal choice. Wet duty, process water and chemical exposure push toward stainless. Outdoor guards and fencing are usually galvanised. For more on that choice, see galvanised vs stainless steel.
