What to Send for a Fast, Accurate Wire Mesh Quote

A checklist of the details a supplier needs to quote wire mesh, perforated sheets or screens correctly the first time, with a sample enquiry.

Most delays in a mesh quote come from missing details. The supplier sends back questions, the buyer checks with the plant, and a week goes by. Sending the right information in the first message avoids that. This checklist covers woven mesh, welded mesh, crimped mesh, perforated sheets, expanded metal, vibrating screens and fencing.

The core details

  • Product. Woven wire mesh, welded mesh, crimped mesh, perforated sheet, expanded metal, vibrating screen or fencing. If unsure, describe the use and attach a photo.
  • Material and grade. Mild steel, GI, high carbon steel, SS 304, SS 316, aluminium or other. For galvanised material, say hot-dip or electro, and the coating class if you have one.
  • Opening size. For woven and welded mesh, give the clear aperture in mm or the mesh count (openings per inch), and say which one you mean. For perforated sheet, give hole size, hole shape and pitch. For expanded metal, give the opening dimensions.
  • Wire diameter or sheet thickness. Wire diameter in mm is clearest. If you only have SWG, check it with the SWG to mm table. For perforated sheet and expanded metal, give the sheet thickness.
  • Size per piece. Length and width in mm, or roll width and roll length. State any tolerance that matters for fitting.
  • Quantity. Pieces, rolls, square metres or kg. If the order is split into lots, list each lot.

Details that change the price

  • Edges and finishing. Raw cut edges, folded edges, bound edges, frames or welded borders.
  • Hooks for screens. Hook type, hook angle, which sides get hooks, and whether the hooks need a sheet metal reinforcing strip. See vibrating screen hooks and tensioning.
  • Weave or crimp type. Plain, twill or Dutch weave for woven mesh; the crimp style for heavy screens. See weave types.
  • Direction. For slotted perforated sheets and long-opening screens, which way the slots run relative to the length of the piece.
  • Surface treatment. Galvanising, powder coating, pickling or passivation, if needed.
  • Documents. Mill test certificate, dimensional report or third party inspection, if your purchase process needs them.

Application and delivery

Tell the supplier what the mesh is for: the material being screened or filtered, its particle size, whether it is wet or dry, the temperature, and the machine model for screens. With this, the supplier can flag an aperture or wire size that looks wrong before you buy, and suggest a heavier wire where wear is the problem.

Give the delivery city and site, say whether the price should include freight, and mention any deadline.

Drawings, samples and photos

A dimensioned drawing removes most doubt. For replacement parts, a sample of the old mesh or screen works just as well, even a worn piece, because the wire and aperture can be measured from it. Where a sample is not available, a clear photo with a tape measure in the frame helps.

If you are working from an old purchase order with a short description, read how to read a wire mesh specification to check what each number means before you copy it.

A sample enquiry

A complete enquiry can still be short. For example:

  • Product: crimped woven wire mesh for a vibrating screen.
  • Material: high carbon steel wire.
  • Aperture: 25 mm square.
  • Wire diameter: 6 mm.
  • Size: 1500 mm x 2000 mm, hooks on the two long sides, hook angle as per attached drawing.
  • Quantity: 12 pieces.
  • Use: dry limestone screening, top deck.
  • Delivery: Nagpur, freight included.
  • Attached: deck drawing and a photo of the current screen.

With an enquiry like this, a supplier can price the job without a round of questions, and you can compare quotes from different suppliers on the same basis.
